Temper and Brown, the independent bar and cultural hub in the Jewellery Quarter, will host Flag Week, a dedicated programme exploring identity, belonging and inclusion in modern Birmingham. Running from Monday 1 December to Thursday 4 December, the week will feature talks, visual displays and community conversations focused on how Brummies express who they are in a rapidly changing city.
The series will conclude with a major roundtable discussion on Thursday 4 December at 7.30pm, bringing together voices from across Birmingham’s political and community landscape:
- Matt Roscoe, Deputy Chair of the Reform Party in Sutton Coldfield
- David Barker, Labour councillor for Kings Heath
- Kate Knowles, Editor of The Dispatch
- Shuranjeet Singh, community leader and mental health advocate from Handsworth
- Keshia Hamilton, community organiser
Together, the panel will explore what it means to be a Brummie in 2025. Topics will include: The rise of political and cultural flags across the city The presence and meaning of Palestinian flags in local communities. How Birmingham continues to navigate identity in a segregated landscape. Whether we can hold multiple identities at once. How political, cultural and personal identities shape our sense of belonging
Flag Week invites Birmingham residents to reflect on how identity is displayed, challenged and celebrated in public spaces. The roundtable aims to create an open, respectful space for dialogue at a time when conversations around identity have become more visible and more contested. The event is free of charge and open to all. Doors open at 7.30pm, with the discussion running until 9pm.
