Why Support?
Dance floor maestro. Creative soul. Artist and social critic. Articulate wordsmith. Steward and pillar of the dance music community. Goofy. Quick-thinking, with biting and witty retorts. Self-proclaimed “grumpy uncle” and “music snob”. And- most of all- Friend.
These words begin to draw a picture- but cannot possibly convey- all that Darrell Tapley is to the Flask community.
For the past 15 years, Darrell’s monthly, Foundation, has been a cornerstone of the northern New England dance music community. Built from scratch and cultivated with love by Darrell, Foundation quickly carved out a unique space among dance music monthlies, where people from all walks of life could gather to dance and fully immerse themselves in music. Flask’s quirky, inclusive, and welcoming environment contributed to this growth, allowing the energy of a tiny, sweaty dance floor to manifest and blossom into life-long friendships and love. Foundation has continued to evolve and ascend past the level of a traditional dance party and into a communal, spiritual gathering. For years, djs and dancers alike have described their time at Foundation using the words “church”, “medicine”, “family”, and “village”.
Since his diagnosis of liver cancer last year, Darrell has been unable to work. He has, however, continued to nurture Foundation- and the entire Flask community- with his music. Darrell has given us countless nights; 15 years’ worth, to be precise- literally an entire generation- of incredible music and shared sacred experiences. His music has been the soundtrack of our lives, allowing us to celebrate together in times of joy, and comforting us through difficult times. As he now faces the most difficult challenge of his life, it is our hope that the community he helped build will give back to him in kind and support him with the same care that he has supported us.
We open our doors to Darrell’s friends, family, regulars at Flask Lounge, lovers of dance music, and all those who have been touched and inspired by his music or art, and invite you to join us for this fundraiser on Saturday, September 28th. Proceeds will benefit Darrell and will ensure that he can continue to pay his monthly expenses while he fights cancer.
As Darrell often says when speaking about the communal spirit of the Portland music community: “It takes a village. “
