"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." But what if there are no more fish?
About this Event

About this Programme

All around the world, ocean temperatures are rising. Currents are changing course. Overfishing and pollution have decimated fish stocks. In Singapore's waters, it is no exception: catches are dwindling along with the kelong fishermen. What's the best way to fish if fish populations are disappearing?

There are more than 120 fish farms in Singapore, many of which are 'kelongs' or sea cages. But there is also a new generation of fish farmers -- including women -- who are establishing land-based farms that use smart engineering, science and technology to grow organic fish. Is this pivot to high-tech aquaculture the best solution to a fishy problem, or is old still gold when it comes to seafood security?

In this panel discussion, we'll scan the seafood industry in Singapore and how both food security and livelihoods are being impacted by climate change and its policy responses. We'll ask, what exactly does sustainability mean for seafood? How does Singapore meet its insatiable seafood demand? How do we move forward and what do we stand to lose if we ignore the wisdoms of fishermen past?

This programme is targetted at a general audience, including teens and those aged 50 and above.

Please note that presentation slides may be available during or after the programme, depending on the programme. Where applicable, only participants who attend the programme can have access to the slides via instructions given during the programme.
