Of all the essential skills of being an artist, few can make or break you like reading and negotiating a CONTRACT. The most common ones spell out the details of a commission project. Another crucial one that's often overlooked is the loan agreement. A third describes the relationship between an artist and a gallery or other representative. Done right, a contract can bring clarity to a high-stakes situation and foster trust and confidence between the parties. And of course, it might protect you if things go badly. We don't have an expert guest this time. Instead, I want to have a round-table discussion among artists and those who love them. For those with experience, please bring your successes and failures to share. For those without experience, please bring questions or curiosity. We will talk about: terminology and definitions; common schedules of payment; language you can use to manage expectations; how to know when to demand better terms or protections. THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE.
FIRST TUESDAYS at Todd's (FORMERLY FINAL FRIDAYS) is a monthly event series at 6:00 pm on the first Tuesday of each month, at LONG GRAIN FURNITURE, which is the studio of artist and furniture maker Todd McCollister. Each event is different; past events have seen guest speakers, panel discussions, round-table discussions, or no format at all. The main idea is to share our experiences and grow a stronger community, so before and after the more formal part, we'll have some time for mixing and mingling. All events are FREE and OPEN to the public. Please share with anyone you think might be interested.
Long Grain Furniture is LOCATED inside the historic Quartermaster Depot, which is a campus of former US Army buildings at 21st Street and Woolworth Avenue. Once inside the gate, wind your way across the campus to the farthest building to the south. It has six garage doors; look for the red dumpster in front. You'll pass through a gap in a chain link fence and a large parking lot with some trailers. If the weather is nice, the garage doors might be open. **NEW: THE BUILDING HAS ITS OWN ADDRESS NOW!
