About this Event
There is little guidance available on source water protection planning that is specific to the context of Ontario First Nations. The OFNTSC is offering a 3-day workshop on First Nation-led Source Water Protection Planning that will be specifically geared to Northern and Remote First Nations. Environmental staff from OFNTSC and Dr. Deborah McGregor from Whitefish River First Nation will be delivering this workshop through a variety of hands-on and interactive modalities. Throughout the workshop, you will explore various aspects of a source water protection planning framework that has been created in the context of First Nations in Ontario and informed by case studies.
By attending this workshop, you will:
Gain an understanding of what source water protection may look like in a First Nation context;
Understand how traditional and community knowledge can be applied to source water protection;
Learn how to develop a source water protection governance structure in your community;
Experiment with various community engagement techniques;
Learn how to assess threats to your watershed and conduct a risk assessment;
Have the opportunity to develop a community of practice for source water protection in First Nations in Ontario;
Be well suited to begin source water protection planning in your community;
and more.
Participants are responsible for booking their own transportation and accommodations. Transportation, accommodations, and per diem will be reimbursed for up to one (1) person per community or organization. The workshop will be held at the Holiday Inn Express (1041 Carrick St) in Thunder Bay. Participants are encouraged to book accommodations here under the reservation code: OFNTSC.
