First Moon Circle- A once in a lifetime empowering menstrual education and celebration for girls aged 9-12.

The way we experience our First Moon (first period) shapes our beliefs about our own worth, power and value as a cyclical being, which stays with us forever. Your child will love this beautiful, magical 3 hour circle where they can learn all about how they can look after themself as they grow up.
There is so much more to having a menstrual cycle than simply
managing periods, and it is so important that children have a place to
learn about all the changes, super powers and self-care needs they will
experience as they reach puberty in an holistic empowering way.
The messages children receive about their body, their periods and
what it means to grow up are extremely powerful, so why not take the
chance to ensure your child gets accurate information and is supported
in a healthy, empowering way so she feels ready to embrace her changes,
her power and her body.
Covering self-care, and teaching children how to get the best out of
their superpowers as they begins their menstrual cycle, First Moon
Circles are doing period education differently. Our circles are proving a
fun and enjoyable way for girls and children who have or will have
periods to learn, play, and feel supported at a pivotal time in their
lives.
Why is menstrual well-being education essential?
Research shows that over 70% of children hate
everything to do their with periods when they aren’t taught a complete,
holistic and affirming menstrual cycle education.
When the focus is on managing blood and pain so it is hidden away,
when children equate having a period to a fear of getting pregnant, and
when they feel that they can’t to talk to anyone about it because it’s
so painfully embarrassing, children suffer.
When we dislike and fear our period, we dislike and fear our body, and so we dislike ourselves.
Body shame, lack of boundaries, inability to voice concerns and ask
for help, low self-esteem and self-respect, poor sexual decision making,
poor future health outcomes and traumatic birth experiences can all be
attributed to how a child is or isn’t supported at their first period.
It sounds shocking and alarmist I know, but the truth is that we
live in a culture that taboos periods, leaving us suffering in silence.
Instead when we offer children a safe, nurturing and empowering
environment in which to learn all about their bodies so they’re
prepared, informed, and appreciate why and how to nurture themselves in a
cycle-friendly way, children thrive.
Body literate children are proud, they ask for the help and care they
need, and they listen to their body’s need and intuition so they know
what a yes and a no feels like inside. They learn to love their cycle as
a ‘moon’ not a ‘sun’, and instead of seeing this as an inconvenience
they honour it.
First Moon Circles aim to cover what is missed in regular school
education and typical books on the subject, and intend to support you as
the parent to learn about your own cycle, and how to support your child
with theirs. We see families become closer through attending First Moon
Circles, where we can reach children who just need to hear this from
someone else.
Why come to a circle?
Children leave feeling more confident and empowered through
greater knowledge, understanding and acceptance of what’s to come, and
how powerful, important, special and transformational this phase of
their life is.
Parents and children are supported to open up conversations to
discuss periods and puberty (and who knows what else!) afterwards,
having been held in the safe space of circle where this talk is safe and
normalised.
If friends attend together, then they gain the added benefit of
sisterhood, having this shared experience to refer back to, and to share
wisdom with their other friends.
Parents are also supported to learn this wisdom alongside their
daughter, feel safe and heard and be guided with tools and language to
support their child.
And often, mothers are able to heal a part of their own relationship
to their menarche and menstruation, through giving their child the
support they wish they’d had as a child, and learning about their own
cycles.
Run of the circle
Session 1: children only
Session 1 runs from 2-4pm with just
the children so I can share menstrual and puberty wisdom, making sure
they feel welcomed, safe, and supported to fill in their knowledge gaps
and ask me all the awkward questions they’ve been curious about.
Session 1 covers:
Ice breaking and story telling,
What are periods and puberty and why do we experience this?
Tracking the stages of puberty and how the body changes over time,
What a menstrual cycle is beyond just a period,
How do you know when your period is coming?
Period care and learning to choose and use products,
Q+A time,
And a short break prior to parents’ arrivals.
Session 2: mothers join in
Session 2 runs for 1h 15 mins for a
mother/carer – daughter learning and celebration experience. The focus
here is on creating a shared experience to open lines of communication,
to create a shared language and understanding, and to bring you closer
in special time right when your child needs to feel close and able to
talk openly with you.
Session 2 covers:
A sacred circle experience bringing adults and children into a special setting,
Learning the four seasons of the cycle, and understanding how mood, energy, feelings and needs change by phase.
Awakening the 4 super powers of the cycle and how to work with them,
Setting up care strategies as a family for each cycle phase,
Creating a ‘first moon bracelet’ to represent and remind of the four seasons of the menstrual cycle,
A blessing for mothers to share loving positive support to the children,
Taking home a gift bag and savouring a nutritious tea
