The Shape of Spirit: Three artists, one exploration of form, movement, and meaningIn The Shape of Spirit, three regional artists, Cheryl Hermansen (Bernard, IA), Paul Chase (Galena, IL), and David Zahn (Moline, IL), come together in a shared exploration of what moves us. Through sculpture and paint, they shape not only form, but the essence that gives it life!
Cheryl Hermansen creates a portal from our eyes to our soul in her dreamlike paintings, where the natural and human worlds harmoniously intertwine. Her layered technique draws light out of shadow, revealing connections between the physical world and the unseen energy that moves through it. Hermansen is inspired by the beauty of nature and the mysticism of our spiritual dreams.
David Zahn’s sculptures invite us into a world where realism and abstraction meet. Known for his bronze and ceramic works, Zahn blends the human form with static and flowing elements that suggest mystery, movement, and timelessness. His art captures both the tangible and the imaginative, leaving space for our own interpretation and emotional response.
Paul Chase translates spirit and rhythm into visual form, transforming canvas and stone into poetic expressions of energy and movement. His large-scale, soulful portraits capture humanity and emotion within each face and are often inspired by members right here in our community. Through his sculptural works of musical notes and dancers, Chase’s art celebrates the harmony between motion and music.
Together, their works form a conversation about movement, spirit, and the universal language of art, reminding us that the meaning of art often lies not only in what we see, but in what we feel.
