Join the ICA and VCUarts Cinema for the second installment of First Features, featuring a showcase of work from animator and filmmaker, Dash Shaw. The showcase will feature Shaw’s 2016 feature-length animation, My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea, and the experimental short Wheel of Fortune (2011) The screenings will be followed by a conversation with the artist and Yossera Bouchtia, Assistant Professor of Cinema at VCU.
Doors and Cafe open at 6 PM with the screening starting at 7 PM. Space is limited and ticket holders will have priority seating.
About the Screenings:
My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea:
High school sophomores Dash and Assaf are best friends and the only writers for the school newspaper. When the editor starts giving Assaf solo assignments, Dash is jealous and reports a false story about Assaf having erectile dysfunction. Later, when Dash is doing research, he learns that the school is not up to code and tries to warn the students, but nobody believes him. Then, an earthquake hits, and the school sinks into the Pacific Ocean with all of the kids trapped inside.
Wheel of Fortune:
Wheel of Fortune (2011) is the result of a challenge the artist, Dash Shaw, posed to himself. Created by pausing an episode of the television game show, Wheel of Fortune, every 3 seconds and making a drawing, Shaw wanted to know how many drawings he could make that could still hold together as an animation. The process also allowed him to dive in and explore the content of America’s most influential game show.
About First FeaturesThe First Features Screening Series highlights the debut feature films of selected filmmakers, including Richmond-based artists, and invites them to discuss their work and process.
