Lameness costs time, money and performance but spotting problems early and knowing what to do can make a real difference.
This practical, hands-on course is designed specifically for farmers and stockpersons who want the confidence to recognise, treat and reduce lameness in their herd. You’ll learn what to look for, how to act quickly, and how to put simple, effective measures in place that protect welfare and improve productivity.
By the end of the course, you’ll be better equipped to:
- Spot lameness earlier
- Understand what’s causing it
- Treat common conditions correctly
- Reduce repeat cases
- Improve mobility, yield and overall herd performance
The course finishes with a formal assessment of your competency, knowledge and understanding. Those who meet the required standard will receive a Lantra Accredited Certificate of Competency giving you recognised proof of your skills.
Course Details
Delivered through a mix of practical demonstration and hands-on experience, this course covers:
- Understanding basic foot anatomy and key landmarks
- The right tools for the job (including knife sharpening)
- An overview of mobility scoring
- Recognising the main lesions that cause lameness
- Safe handling, lifting and examination of the foot
- Introduction to the 5-step trimming method
- Treatment protocols, including block selection and NSAID use
- Practical lesion treatment and blocking
This is practical training you can take straight back to the farm helping you improve animal welfare, reduce vet costs and keep cows performing at their best.
