Fireworks is a group exhibition curated by Con Gerakaris at China Heights in Surry Hills. The exhibition is titled Fireworks after the 2007 Animal Collective song, encompassing themes of growth, memory, cycles of life and nostalgia for the places we remember but don't remember us. Reina Takeuchi will be activating her artwork An ode to a summer festival I’ve never been to (お盆) with a performance from 1 pm on Saturday Nov 23.
The artwork reconstructs her grandmother's archival calligraphy scrolls through performance and origami forms.
The installation fuses together her projected ideas of obon (お盆) the ancient Japanese belief in ancestral spirits and a Japanese Buddhist custom to honour the spirits of one’s ancestors. It is an ode to all the things she has never been able to do – never participated in obon, never been to a Japanese summer festival, and never learned Japanese ‘properly,’ before her Obachan/grandmother passed away.

Bios:
Reina Takeuchi (choreographer/dancer) is a Japanese Australian independent dance artist interested in cross-cultural exchange, collaboration and creative facilitation. Her performance projects have included installations at Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, and SomoS Arts, Berlin, and performances for Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art, Performance Space, the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Late program, Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Pier ⅔ and Sydney Dance Company.
Currently based in Sydney, guitarist & composer Yutaro Okuda has been making waves on both the Australian & international music circuits with his distinctive sound & melodic sensibility.
Specialising in jazz, contemporary & improvised music, Okuda currently performs with artists including Fetherstone, Ellen Mara, Rogues, Sam Gill’s Scattered, Poltophagy, Arcing Wires, Memewars & Divergence Jazz Orchestra, as well as being a bandleader/composer with featured recordings on ABC Jazz.
