Atlantic Beach, Florida’s Funky Folk-Rock Phenomenon
Hailing from Atlantic Beach, Florida, Firewater Tent Revival brings a foot-stomping, soul-lifting blend of folk, roots, Americana, and just enough punk spirit to keep things unpredictable. Their music is the kind that grabs you by the collar, pours you a whiskey, and dares you not to dance.
The band began in 2010 when founding members Dave Smith (vocals/guitar) and Jon Deering (bass)—former members of a punk band called The Hopeless—decided they weren’t done making music. What started as a casual collaboration quickly turned into something more infectious. They welcomed an eclectic cast of musicians, including Nigel Ledford (banjo), Paul Morrisseau (fiddle), Jeff Hoff (saxophone/harmonica), and Kris Whatley (washboard—yes, that’s really part of the act). With an open-door policy that encourages guest appearances and spontaneous jams, Firewater Tent Revival became known for shows where the only thing predictable is a damn good time.
Their live performances are a riot of rhythm, featuring an energetic mix of Americana covers, unexpected genre mashups, and a solid lineup of original tunes mostly written by frontman Dave Smith. Whether reimagining songs by The Devil Makes Three, Hank Williams III, or The Grateful Dead—or tearing through their own crowd favorites—the band keeps fans on their feet and shouting for more.
Venues like The Fly’s Tie Irish Pub and Bold City Brewery helped cement their place in Jacksonville’s music scene, and in 2015 they dropped their debut EP Sinkin' Boat—just months before earning third place in Jacksonville’s One Spark festival thanks to overwhelming support from the crowd.
So what do you call it? Folk-rock? Punkgrass? Americana jam-funk? Labels don’t really stick. All you need to know is this: if you’re into high-energy shows, killer musicianship, and spontaneous good times that go 'til last call, Firewater Tent Revival is your new favorite band.
