See the forest light up at night and enjoy a guided hike to catch fireflies!
About this Event

If you have never experienced the magic of the forest lighting up with fireflies or you just want to relive the happy summer nights of your childhood, join us for Firefly Walk at Fanshawe Conservation Area. This night hike begins with games all about firefly development and communication. Kids will collect cards and act out the firefly life cycle while adults use Morse code to imitate firefly flashes and find their firefly match. Once night has fallen, we will begin our hike to hopefully see the fireflies dazzle in the forest and catch some in the meadow for close-up observation. Nets and bug containers will be provided by UTRCA staff.

Please note this is not a drop-off program. We invite families with at least one adult to come and enjoy a classic summer pastime together. We only have 20 spots available, so sign up soon! We can’t wait to catch fireflies with you!

Program Notes:

-Firefly Walk is a free event, but the regular gate fee will apply when entering the park. London residents are eligible to check out a free park day pass from London Public Library, although availability may vary.

-Registration through Eventbrite is required to attend Firefly Walk. All participants must receive their own ticket, including children and babies. This is so we can have an accurate headcount for COVID-19 regulations.

-Prior to attending the event, all participants must review the UTRCA COVID-19 Guidelines for Participants in Community Education & Partnerships Programs & Events.

-If you are feeling sick, please stay home and cancel your Eventbrite registration as soon as possible to give someone on the waitlist a chance to participate.

-Please arrive 10 minutes early so we can complete a health check and review our COVID-19 safety protocols.

-We ask all participants over 4 years of age to have a mask on hand at all times for situations when social distancing cannot be maintained. However, masks do not need to be worn outdoors when groups are at least 2m apart.

-Please come dressed appropriately for a nighttime adventure in the woods. Firefly Walk will run rain or shine, but will be canceled in the case of severe inclement weather. If the event is cancelled due to inclement weather, we will notify all participants through email by 8 am on the day of the event. We will do our best to reschedule the event to a new date/time.

-There is a portable restroom near the Campground office that you will be able to use if needed.

-Don’t forget to pack a water bottle and nut-free snacks.

Please note: If we are unable to run this program due to a change in COVID-19 restrictions, we will notify all participants as soon as possible.

All UTRCA summer events will be led by UTRCA Environmental Educators. Staff have First Aid training and vulnerable persons checks. We are excited to share our passion for nature and the outdoors with you!
