A Talk by Nick Higgett, Chair of the Eden Valley and Penrith Astronomy Group. This event is part of the 2026 Yorkshire Dales National Park Dark Skies Festival
In 2025, in collaboration with the University of Manchester, the Eden Valley and Penrith Astronomy Group installed a Fireball camera on the roof of the Maulds Meaburn Village Institute. This camera is the only one of its type in Cumbria and one of only a handful in Northern Britain. Nick will explain how the camera, which is part of an international network, detects both meteors and fireballs and helps in their retrieval for scientific investigation.
Nick will also show the new Dark Skies Light Meter which is also installed in the Village Institute as part of an international light pollution monitoring scheme. If the skies are clear you may even get the chance to see the Yorkshire Dales’ internationally famous dark skies. Please note U18’s must be accompanied by an adult.
