About this Event

Join us for a special afternoon celebrating the Taming the Desert exhibition.
3pm: Performance by Nadia Calmet, a Fusion of African and Andean Rhythms
Los Angeles-based Afro-Peruvian musician Nadia Calmet bridges pre-Hispanic traditions with African diasporic influences, showcasing how cultural fusions create new expressions of identity and resilience. Calmet connects Andean traditions of the Nazca region, highlighted in the Taming the Desert exhibition at the Fowler Museum, with the cultural contributions of the African diaspora. Her performance celebrates Indigenous and African traditions, including the use of "checo"—a gourd vessel inherited from Indigenous peoples and repurposed by African immigrants into a musical instrument. As part of this vibrant showcase, Nadia Calmet & Afro-Peruvian Experience will open her performance with El Alcatraz, a dynamic partner dance that embodies the element of fire, symbolizing passion, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of cultural fusion and survival.
Nadia Calmet is an accomplished artivist with more than 25 years of experience in teaching, choreographing, and composing traditional Afro-Peruvian music. She has created over 20 theatrical productions, and holds degrees and certifications in art therapy, public policy development, intercultural education, African diaspora dances, and cultural management. As the director of The Afro-Peruvian Experience, she develops interdisciplinary performances to promote Peru’s cultural diversity and highlight the significant contributions of Afro-descendants to global culture.
4:30pm: Exhibition Tour Led by Solsire Cusicanqui
Solsire Cusicanqui will discuss the fantastic creatures, powerful ancestors, and mythological beings found in this exhibition, which illustrates how ancient Andean societies looked for spiritual meaning and numinous help in an unpredictable and challenging world.
This program is co-sponsored by the Race in the Global Past through Native Lenses project, UCLA CMRS Center for Early Global Studies, and the Consulado General del Perú en Los Angeles (Peruvian Consulate of Los Angeles)
