Satoko Okuno (b. 1991, Yokohama, Japan) is a multidisciplinary artist working in painting, ceramic sculpture, and printmaking. Okuno explores profound dialogues between herself and the creatures she conjures, ranging from familiar animals to whimsical, imaginary beings. Drawing inspiration from her two cats, encounters at the zoo, and ancient art forms like Greek pottery and Egyptian sculptures, she creates vibrant mixed-media paintings and glazed stoneware sculptures, transforming these creatures into guardians—sentinels of comfort and protection.

This exploration of guardianship is deeply rooted in Okuno’s Japanese upbringing, shaped by the cultural richness of Shintoism—the belief that all things, from natural materials to animals and humans, have a spirit. Growing up surrounded by traditional Japanese guardian sculptures placed at shrine entrances for protection, she reimagines these figures in a contemporary context. Her creatures, whether real or fantastical, serve as companions, offering solace and understanding in a world often burdened with trauma.
