This new online course is aimed at helping students and young people develop practical financial skills that will support them through college and into future employment.
For students attending college in the current financial climate, having control of their finances is essential to their success at university. ATU's Access & Participation service are seeing increasing numbers of students seeking funding support with a 39% increase in students applying for the Student Assistance Fund.
The ATU Galway Mayo Access & Widening Participation team have responded to this need by working with the MABS team to develop a new online course dedicated to helping students take control of their financial wellbeing by learning how to budget and keep track of their finances.
The course covers five key learning outcomes:
Needs, Wants & Sustainable Spending - Distinguish between spending needs and spending wants. Appreciate what responsible and sustainable spending means in protecting the environment.
Money Management - Develop knowledge on money management: develop a budget, the importance of savings & managing spend.
Borrowing & Long Term Financial Health - Consider implications of borrowing on long-term financial health and understand the costs of different credit providers
Risks & Scams - Learn how to identify and protect against common scams and frauds. Awareness of money mules & risks relating to Cryptocurrency.
Tackling Debt - If you find yourself in financial difficulty - how to manage & prioritise debt
