The Mumbai Dance Season will conclude with classical Indian dance presentations curated by Dr. Malati Agneeswaran and Dr. Jayashree Rajagopalan. Noted artists along with their troupes will present intricate choreographies and soul-stirring performances. Dr. Malati Agneeswaran is a writer, research scholar, teacher, dancer and choreographer. She has been associated with the Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya (University of Mumbai) for over 30 years. She is a recipient of a senior fellowship for dance from the Sangeet Natak Akademi and an ‘A’ grade artiste in Mohiniattam. Dr. Jayashree Rajagopalan hails from an illustrious family of artists who have been preserving the traditional arts for four generations. She is the foremost disciple of the internationally renowned Indian danseuse, Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, who has researched and revived the 108 karanas of the Natyashastra, which form the basic unit of dance movement in Jambudwipa—a name used for India in ancient sources—and evolved a distinctive style known as Bharata Nrityam. Rajagopalan has completed the Nritya Visharad and the Nrithyashali, specializing in studying the 108 karanas. She has had specialized training in the nattuvangam (conducting a classical dance performance by reciting rhythmic syllables and playing the cymbals) and Indian classical music and has even scored music for some of her numbers. Rajagopalan is the Founder-Director of Nrithyodaya – The Academy of Performing Arts. She is an empanelled artiste of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), an ‘A’ grade artiste of Doordarshan, and a recipient of the Bharata Nritya Choodamani Award.
