Drummer John Philip Murray debuts his Septet in Arthur’s
About this Event

Filology was formed in Cork by drummer John Philip Murray in 2013. Since then, they have performed gigs, residencies, festivals, and concerts – most recently at The Mall Arts Centre, Youghal, and the Ionad Cultúrtha, Ballyvourney, under the auspices of Cork County Arts, and Culture Ireland.

The engine room consists, piano, double bass, and drums.

Brian Priestley on piano, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, but most importantly, swing, feel and inventiveness to the combo. If you don’t already know him, you could do worse than look him up, or buy some of his books on Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, etc., ….

Double bass player, Niall McGuinness, is both a solid rock of time and harmony during ensemble playing and a force of creativity when soloing. He’s a formidable player, whether with fingertips, or bow.

From the early 1970’s, John Philip Murray was a well-known drummer on the Dublin jazz scene, before moving to Co. Cork in the mid 1980’s. He is surrounded by a great crop of young musicians who continually surprise him and stimulate his playing. He enjoys steering Filology from the driver’s seat of the drum chair, using space, dynamics and above all, the linear thread of the ride cymbal.

Back in the day, Jo Smyth used to sing with the leading luminaries of Irish jazz, including Louis Stewart and ‘Professor’ Peter O’Brien in the deep south-west of Sherkin Island! Nowadays, she uses her rich voice to interpret a wide range of songs, including her favourites from the ‘Great American Song Book and beyond.

Saxophonist Karl Rooney, is a Tenor Titan, regularly featured as a soloist with Paul Dunlea’s massive Irish Jazz Orchestra, when playing their extravaganzas with top international players. Thankfully for us, he is also at home playing delicate ballads in the intimacy of small-group settings – but if it needs stoking, he’s able to add fire to the cooking!!

For Filology’s Dublin debut, expect to hear music from the canon of jazz, Mainstream, Bebop, Latin American, Cool, and Funky, including a few rarely heard gems. Facebook: @FilologyJazz
