Ad Hoc Cinema, in association with Coral Gables Art Cinema and Noir Age, is pleased to announce a special presentation of short films by visionary artist, choreographer, dancer, film theorist, poet, lecturer, writer, and photographer Maya Deren (1917-1961), one of the most important avant-garde filmmakers of her time.Known for her use of experimental editing techniques and her fascination with ecstatic religious dances, Deren created a compelling body of work that cemented her as an important figure in the avant-garde community of the 1940s and 1950s.
We invite you to revisit the works of a master or, for the first time, encounter the alchemic genius of one of the most important filmmakers of the 20th century, juxtaposed with original live score accompaniments by experimental drummer, percussionist, producer, and composer Valentina Magaletti, and multi-disciplinary artist/composer Richard Vergez of Noir Age.
Part One
Meshes of the Afternoon (14 min)
The Witch's Cradle (12 min)
Live Score by Richard Vergez
Part Two
Dance Films (47min)
Live Score by Valentina Magaletti
A brief discussion follows each part of the program.
