Film presentation: WinnDevelopment, Tenants, and the Slab and Tunnel Project at Walden Square Road
“This Is Unacceptable” is the 30-minute documentary about WinnDevelopment’s plans to build a slab-and-tunnel complex over Walden Square Road.
Unlike other successful, thoughtfully planned housing projects in the area, Winn's proposed 9-story and 5-story slab-style buildings would replace mature trees with a 250-foot tunnel for parking, create an urban canyon and heat island, and disrupt the community. Moreover the site is far from public transportation and supermarkets. Warehousing low income people among the already existing population of low income families will have deleterious consequences to the health of the existing campus. This development would destroy green spaces, inconvenience residents, and pose safety risks, especially for children.
We advocate halting this project and instead improving existing structures and preserving the mature trees and green spaces. Residents, particularly non-English speakers, are largely unaware of Winn's plans and have been subjected to years of neglect and intimidation by Winn. The community urges support for preserving the existing environment and ensuring renovations prioritize the well-being of current residents. For these and additional reasons presented in our film, we demand that WinnDevelopment cease and desist from its plans to build on this already fragile living space.
