About this Event

We invite you to a special screening of the award-winning feature film "Eskawatã Kaiwai: The Spirit of Transformation" (2023), followed by a discussion with its director, Lara Jacoski. This powerful documentary takes viewers deep into the Amazon Rainforest, where the Huni Kuin, who identify as the "true people," is undergoing a cultural revival after decades of oppression and suppression of their identity.

In 2000, the Huni Kuin began a journey of reconnection with their essence through the communal use of their sacred medicine, ayahuasca. For many Amazonian communities, ayahuasca is more than just a powerful plant—it is a gateway to ancestral knowledge and memories.

Currently, the film is private as it travels the global film festival circuit, having been accepted into over 20 festivals across 12 countries and winning 6 awards so far. It is on a three-month tour, with 45 screenings scheduled in Europe and the USA across 37 cities, 20 additional screenings worldwide, and eight in indigenous territories in Brazil.

This event provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the importance of integrating decolonizing perspectives and diverse worldviews into legal historiography. Following the screening, we will host a collective reflection workshop moderated by our institute's researchers, Karolyne Mendes and Karla Escobar, with participation from Lara Jacoski. The discussion will explore her experiences in ethnographic audiovisual production from a decolonizing perspective.

Don't miss this chance to explore the connections between cinema, legal history, and the realities of the Global South.
