We will be showing two films that are recordings of talks given at the BRLSI. Each film is approximately 45 minutes long and there will be a break between them.
The Sack of Bath: Alex Sherman. In the 1960s, Bath City Council set about replacing lesser Georgian buildings with modern developments. Most were out of harmony, out of proportion and, even worse, out of place. By the end of the decade, the demolition had really taken hold. Only Grade 1 buildings were safe. As the wider world realised what was going on, through articles such as those written for The Times by Adam Fergusson, national opposition intensified. The Council, though, seemed determined. How was the demolition eventually halted, what was saved that could so easily have been lost, and what’s happened since? Alex Sherman is the Chief Executive of Bath Preservation Trust. He has enjoyed a varied career which has included community development, landscape restoration in Somerset, supporting cultural heritage, museums and the built environment and providing grants to local groups. He has previously been a trustee for a community transport charity and vice-Chair of a youth work charity.
Secrets of Bath: Bath is well known for its Roman Baths and grand Georgian architecture. But what of its other periods of history, its industrial heritage, and its many green spaces? Karen Warren‘s book Secret Bath set out to discover some of the lesser-known sights in and around the city. Join her on an exploration of some of the hidden, obscure and occasionally quirky details that you may never have noticed before. Karen Warren is a Bath-based travel writer, book reviewer and novelist.
