First Friday Films: Troubled Texts: Banned Books on Film
The Grapes of Wrath, directed by John Ford, 1940. Starring Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, and John Carradine. Based on the 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Introduction by Jenny Romero, Robert De Niro Curator of Film.
This series features three notable films based on banned books and is presented in conjunction with the Ransom Center’s exhibition . Jenny Romero, Robert De Niro Curator of Film at the Harry Ransom Center, will introduce the film, examining how book bans affected film adaptations and how filmmakers worked within the confines of Hollywood’s censorship, or “self-regulation” apparatus, the Production Code Administration.
