About this Event

The CGM presents a special screening of The Chess Player, the Spanish drama directed by Luis Oliveros that explores a powerful story of courage, resilience, and the role of chess as a lifeline during times of war.

This gathering will bring together distinguished figures from Miami’s diplomatic, cultural, audiovisual, social, and political spheres.

All proceeds from the event support the launch of the CGM Chess Club, which will debut during Family Day in January.

7:00 PM — Opening remarks
7:10 PM — Brief pre-screening introduction to the film and the context of the evening
7:15 PM — Screening of The Chess Player (runtime: 1h 38m)
8:55 PM — Post-screening Q&A with filmmakers and chess experts


About the Film

The Chess Player tells the story of Diego Padilla, who wins the Spanish Chess Championship in 1934 and soon after marries a French journalist named Marianne. As the Spanish Civil War intensifies, the family relocates to France in search of safety but confronts new dangers under Nazi occupation. Diego is eventually imprisoned after being falsely accused of espionage, and under these circumstances, chess becomes his only means of survival.

The film is directed by Luis Oliveros, written by Julio Castedo, and produced by Juan Antonio Casado, Gerardo Herrero, Julio Castedo, Javier López Blanco, and Mariela Besuievsky. It was created in collaboration with the following production companies: Videoassist.hu, Tornasol Films, Hernández y Fernández Producciones Cinematográficas, and Ishtar Films.
