Free and open to the public Filmmaker and artist Randall LaBry discusses his film projects from the Cajun Renaissance period – the time when South Louisiana’s French movement and Acadian identity politics gained global attention. In the 1970’s and 80’s, LaBry and his cohort of young creatives took part in transnational initiatives that sent them abroad to gain media production experience. The result was the film _Vermenton Plage_, named for the group of experimental French folk musicians who fell in love with Cajun music.
The 1978 film _C’est Nice de Parler les Deux Manières_, directed by Denis Godin, focuses on Kaplan residents’ experiences as French speakers. Randall LaBry is one subject in this documentary, which also contains some rare footage of Mardi Gras runs and boucheries.
Randall and a group of special guests will discuss their memories and processes of making art en francais during a period often cited as a pivotal moment for language and culture movements in South Louisiana.
