WE NEVER LEFT portrays a heart-wrenching duality between Beirut and New York.
About this Event

On April 4th, 2025, the Khayrallah Center will collaborate with the Triangle Lebanese American Center to host a screening of WE NEVER LEFT.

- Logline: Set during the Lebanese revolution, WE NEVER LEFT portrays a heart-wrenching duality between Beirut and New York, an impassioned testament to the Lebanese diaspora’s unrequited but irrepressible love for their homeland.

- Synopsis: Saying goodbye to loved ones at the Beirut airport has become an unfortunate tradition in Lebanon, even a curse. Lebanese emigrants, driven abroad by decades of turmoil, are more than double those still left in their homeland. After civil protests erupt in Lebanon on October 17th 2019, WE NEVER LEFT follows three young Lebanese expats as they wage the Lebanese revolution from New York and fight for a better country. As they go through their collective journey, they each individually confront their relationship with their homeland and their own complicated identities. This is the story of political and personal revolutions a world away from home.

- Director's biography: Loulwa Khoury is a New York based filmmaker, film editor born and raised in Beirut. She edited Paradise Without People (2019), Dusty and Stones (2022), Joy Dancer (2024) and Traces of Home. She also directed her first feature documentary, We Never Left. Her other work includes award-winning documentaries City of Ghosts (2017), Some Kind of Heaven (2020) and It Will Be Chaos (2018). She was also one of the mentees of the Karen Schmeer Editing Fellowship Diversity Program of the year 2019-2020 and a fellow in the Sundance Co//ab Art of Editing Fellowship 2020, and is currently in the DOC NYC x VC Storytelling Incubator cohort as well as a winner of the Creative Power Award.
