About this Event

The ‘art islands’ of Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima in the Seto Inland Sea are often represented by the iconic Yellow Pumpkin sculpture by Kusama Yayoi which stood at the end of a pier on Naoshima, until a typhoon swept it away in August 2021.

In parallel with our exhibition '', which explores the Inujima ‘Art House Project’ found on one of these art islands, Inujima, Japan House London offers two free screenings of Kusama – Infinity, a documentary sharing insights on the life of prominent contemporary artist Kusama Yayoi (b. 1929), whose work is displayed in galleries and museums around the world.

Directed by art historian and filmmaker Heather Lentz, Kusama - Infinity is a brief biographical documentary exploring Kusama’s determination to become a world-renowned artist.

By tracing Kusama’s journey from a conservative upbringing in Japan to the challenges of sexism and racism of 1960s America in professional artistic circles to joining the counter-culture scene of New York until her rise to international fame, it offers a deep insight into the connections between Kusama’s life over six decades and the evolution of social consciousness in modern society.

This film is screened in Japanese and English, with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 80 minutes. Please note that this movie is rated 12 and is therefore not considered suitable for an audience younger than 12 years old unaccompanied.
