Join us for a powerful film night featuring the UK premiere of Loss of Balance (Utrata równowagi), the debut feature by Polish director Korek Bojanowski — who will be joining us online for a post-screening Q&A. Already referred to as “the Polish Whiplash,” this bold and emotionally charged drama explores the fine line between inspiration and manipulation in the world of theatre education.
The film follows Maja, a young acting student who rediscovers her passion and confidence under the guidance of a charismatic director. But when she learns of his abusive teaching methods, she must decide whether to stay silent or confront the truth. Loss of Balance is a gripping portrayal of power, vulnerability, and the courage to speak out — inspired by real conversations with students and graduates of Polish theatre schools.
The film raises urgent questions: Why do violent pedagogical methods persist in spaces meant to nurture creativity? And how do young artists reconcile formative trauma with personal growth?
Loss of Balance premiered at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia in 2024, where it received four awards including the Jury Special Mention and the Don Quixote Award. It stars rising talent Nel Kaczmarek (Netflix’s The Mire) and features cinematography by Jakub Czerwiński (Silver Frog winner at Camerimage).
Supported by Film Hub Scotland, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network, and funded by Screen Scotland and National Lottery funding from the BFI and the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh.
Part of the Beetroots Collective (beetroots.org), an organisation led by a group of diverse artists and creatives aiming to promote Eastern European culture in Scotland.
