About this Event
Fires and Fascism is a crowdfunded documentary investigating the intersections of climate breakdown, financial interests, and authoritarian shifts. Most importantly, it’s a story about resistance—and how people are fighting back to create change.
It is an inspirational documentary to show how groups in Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal are responding to the fires that are growing in intensity through closer connections with nature, with each other, and with political decision-making.
The film shows how fascist regimes have facilitated capitalist ventures that have created the fires. It explores how Europe’s wildfires are tied to organised crime and big business, and showcases grassroots resistance.
Fire & Fascism was crowdfunded and filmed by Pete Knapp, within weeks of finishing his PhD in air quality - a first-time filmmaker who travelled across five countries by public transport, interviewing people he met at the sites of some of Europe's largest wildfires. People were given the choice to speak in their native languages, and it is fully subtitled in English.
The reason for making the film is to reduce modern day fascism and to help unify people in times of growing division. It aims to start the conversation on what we need to do about the rise of fascism today.
The screening will be followed by an open discussion to share reflections, ideas, and connect.
