About this Event

This Black History Month 2025, join us at Kelvin Hall for a special screening of two short films by Manu Kurewa, in partnership with Ignite Theatre.

“Sunshine” is a short film produced by Ignite Theatre. It sensitively explores the relationship between an African father and daughter in Scotland as they come to terms with bereavement.
The second film is a short documentary about Jean Donnachie, a Glasgow woman who led protests against dawn raids and the deportation of asylum seeker families.
The films deal with difficult subject matter but are also a celebration of life and human resilience. Following the screenings, there will be a brief Q&A session with the director.

Born in Zimbabwe in 1965, Manu Kurewa is a filmmaker based in the UK. His background is in community touring theatre, where he worked extensively with youth groups to create plays that voiced community concerns. Kurewa attended a directing course at the National Film and Television School in England where he made three short films including One Sunday Morning (1997) and Mangwana (1998, Cannes Film Festival). He has since been commissioned to adapt a successful Harare stage play, Waiters, into a ZBC television series back in 2000, and completed a half-hour drama entitled Small Love, for Scottish television.
