12.30 = CINEMA CAFÉ OPENS (all films on 16mm! Your ticket is good for all 3 films and you can attend or not attend individual films as you wish) 13.00 = “Brainstorm,” directed by William Conrad, 1965, 105 min.
This later-period noir thriller is stylish, hard-hitting and exaggerated and plenty strange in the best tradition of Film Noir. Stars Anne Francis, Dana Andrews and Viveca Lindfors. Jeff Hunter in the leading role as a brilliant but deeply troubled scientist is excellent and long considered it among his very best roles.. Great jazzy soundtrack, inventive photography, strong performances and unexpected plot twists make this “neo-noir” a real treat.
15.00 = “The Tarnished Angels,” directed by Douglas Sirk, 1957, 91 min.
Set in the Depression era, this tale of daredevils doing air shows and their nomad lifestyle is one of cult director Douglas Sirk's very best films, and also the finest screen adaptation of a William Faulkner novel.
17.00 = “Detour,” directed by Edgar G. Ulmer, 1945, 68 min.
Among the most classic B-movies ever made, this film oozes with all the darkness and pessimism that characterizes true film noir. A troubling rumination on people who cannot outrun their fates, it gave the world Ann Savage who made film history as the hard-as-nails wild girl of the road, tough yet sexy, rotten to the core yet not entirely unsympathetic.
