What is Casa de Peregrinos?
Founded in April 1979 by four La Mesa residents with just $3,000 and a vision to aid the homeless, Casa de Peregrinos (“House of Pilgrims”) began as a shelter, food-and-clothing bank, and cooperative garden. In 1982, the organization shifted its focus exclusively to food distribution, hiring its first paid employee, Isabel Romero, as office and volunteer manager. Under the leadership of Sister Rose Kidd in 1984, Casa de Peregrinos opened its first office in Las Cruces, launched its flagship Food Security Program to provide monthly food baskets to families, and gained nonprofit status in 1987. From these humble beginnings, it has grown into Southern New Mexico’s largest and most successful food pantry, now serving thousands of families each year across 23 locations.
