An event curated by Patricia Coleman:Filament is an avant-garde jazz trio featuring longtime friends and collaborators Alex Carter (saxophone), Tobe Tsuchiya (piano), and Danilo Randjic-Coleman (bass). Formed in early 2024, the group draws inspiration from a wide spectrum of genres - ranging from film scores and chamber music to death metal. Their debut EP Once Upon a Time on the Sun was released in March 2025.
The roots of the band trace back to 2005. Tobe and Alex first began playing music together at Bard College, where they both studied under John Esposito and Erica Lindsay. In 2016, Alex began performing with Danilo in the band Kleptokrat and starting in 2019, the three played alongside other New York musicians in a series of improvised music sessions.
Additionally, Randjic-Coleman was a founding member of James the Miserable and Eidetic Seeing and has performed alongside John Zorn, Nick Millevoi, and Elliott Sharp, among others. Tsuchiya has performed with Pitch Blak Brass Band and Diez y Seis and studied with Maryanne Amachet and German Diez. Carter was in Scrap Relation and Diez y Seis and studied under Bruce Williams.
The goal of Filament is to create music that is complex and relevant, to strike a balance between popular musical forms and the avant-garde.
