In honor of 2025 Georgia Arbor Week, Trees Atlanta and Park Pride are co-hosting a Tour of Champion Trees at Herbert Taylor Park. Some of the trees in this park are 150-180 years old! This public park is a member of the Old-Growth Forest Network, and home to several of Atlanta’s Champion Trees! This tour will be led by Park Pride’s Director of Education Eli Dickerson, Park Ambassador and Friends of Herbert Taylor Park Greta Hutto, and Trees Atlanta Docent Priya Sarathy. We’ll try to find the champion trees amongst the remnants of this incredible old-growth hickory beach forest, learn more about the Champion Tree Program, and about opportunities to connect with groups and organizations that can help protect Atlanta’s champion trees and forest.
About the Guides:
Eli Dickerson is the Director of Education at Park Pride. Eli leads programs that increase understanding and awareness of the importance of parks and enhances community capacity to engage in parks and spearhead improvement efforts .Eli has been a fixture in the environmental world in Atlanta, GA, since 2005. He has a passion for native plants, championing trees, and habitat restoration/preservation. He loves leveraging his skills to address intersectional environmental issues while working to educate park goers, and also preserve and activate local parks.
Greta Hutto is a member of the Friends of Herbert Taylor Park and Daniel Johnson Park and a resident of the Morningside neighborhood. She finds peace and revived spirit in the natural world and feels deep gratitude for those that have worked to preserve and protect this wild space for us all. Greta is currently participating in Park Pride’s Park Stewardship Academy program and excited to further engage the community in our beautiful neighborhood forest.
Priya Sarathy is a Trees Atlanta Docent and loves and appreciates the urban forests and trails. She has been a resident of the neighborhood near Herbert Taylor park and has seen forests evolve over the years. She sees the need for building awareness and educating Atlantans on the rich oasis of flora that challenges the forces of climate change, and the urban development that led to soil erosion. She volunteers with Trees Atlanta as a docent and tree pruner to help promote healthy city tree canopy.
