Trip/area Description: Steve Goff will lead a birding by bicycle ride on TM Goodwin Waterfowl Management Area northwest of Fellsmere. We will begin at the Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area and bike around the interior loop, stopping to look at birds and other wildlife. There is an observation platform and a covered pavilion that we can stop at for a break and to get an elevated perspective. We should see many wading birds as well as raptors.
Duration of trip: 3 to 4 hours
Distance: About 5 to 6 miles round trip.
Degree of difficulty, and any special instructions: Participants will need to bring their own bicycle, suitable for riding on a hard packed dirt road and have all necessary equipment. Participants need to be able to bike the distance of the trip. Make sure to bring water, snacks, and sunscreen/sun protection. We will make frequent stops to look at the birds and wildlife. There are boat ramps, parking areas, and restrooms without running water at the start of the ride so be sure to bring anything you will need with you.
Where you’d like participants to meet: Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area, 18625 Fellsmere Grade Road, Fellsmere, Florida 32948. It is a very long dirt road from Babcock Road/County Road 507 to the parking area.
Time of meeting: 8:00 am. Be sure to allow for the driving time on Fellsmere Grade Road.
Number of participants limit (either individuals, or vehicles if a driving tour): 12 people.
