A 2-day workshop designed to improve the ability of field staff to identify local species of fish and use data to asses waterbody health.
About this Event

When:

Day 1: April 24th | 8 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (6.5-hour Lecture (class) with 30 min. lunch)

Day 2: April 25th | 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (7-hour Field Practicum with 30 min. lunch)

*Rain Date: April 28th, 2025 (Mon.) In the event of adverse weather, the rain date of April 28th will be used to make up for the practicum portion of the class. Please block off Monday, April 28th in your calendar in case rescheduling is necessary.

Lecture: Lakeside Hall at Environmental Learning Center, Clackamas Community College, Oregon City Campus, 19600 Molalla Avenue, Oregon City, OR 97045

Field Practicum: TBD


Professional Credit:

Clackamas Community College, 1.35 CEU (13.5 PDH), Certificate of Completion will be provided.



Workshop Description:

2-Day lecture/field experience

This hands-on workshop is designed to improve the ability of field staff to identify local species of fish, and to use the resulting data for assessment of waterway health. Participants will learn to identify species commonly encountered in this region, practice using various sampling gear and techniques, and determine best approaches to analyzing the data. Day 2 of class will be spent in the field collecting and identifying fish in a local waterway.

Lunch is provided for the Day 1. Please pack a lunch for the field day.

Format: 1st Day: at the ELC, include sampling gear overview and prep for next day; 2nd Day: Full-day field trip; Morning to PGE facility &/or juvenile salmon screw trap & in Afternoon to off-site location to practice collection & identification using electroshocking &/or seining (for warm water species).



Instructors:

John Cox is the Hydro Program Biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in Clackamas.

Kevin Stertz is the Assistant District Fish Biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in Clackamas.

Buddy Phibbs is the Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Clackamas district.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this workshop, students should be able to:

  • Accurately identify about 45 local fish species by using key morphological characteristics.
  • Use standard techniques and equipment to properly collect, identify & count specimens.
  • Explain how the goal might influence the approach to sampling fish populations in local waterways.

  • Sampling gear/techniques (snorkeling, in-place traps, seining, electrofishing, nets, spawning surveys)
  • Collection methods (passive & active)
  • Approaches to data analysis

Refund Policy:

Cancellations are allowed up to 1-day prior to the start of class, however, refund amounts vary based on when you notify us of your cancellation.

  • >30 days prior to event: Full refund, excluding Eventbrite fees
  • 15-30 days prior to event: 75% refund
  • 1-14 days prior to event: 50% refund
