Fiction Writing for Beginners \/\/ TUESDAYS \/\/ Sept 19-Oct 24 This is a beginner's writing course that teaches students the building blocks of character, voice, and structure in fiction.
About this Event

There are as many different ways to write fiction as there are people who want to write it. We’re here to draw out the stories you want to tell in the way you want to tell them. Using the building blocks of character, voice, and structure, you will learn different ways to put together a story, and by the end of class you will have a rough draft of a short story in your hands! All genres welcome.

You will also learn how to help one another grow creatively through critique sessions that value curiosity and thoughtfulness. Story nuts and bolts aside, this is also a class about learning your process, what moves and motivates you, how to build a supportive writing community, and how to keep going once class is over.

The weekly 2-hour sessions of this course will focus on:

Idea generation

Characters

Tone/voice/POV

Plot/structure

Constructive critique

The class requires no previous writing experience!

Instructor: Eden Robins

Eden Robins loves novels best, but they take forever so she also writes short stories and self-absorbed essays at places like Catapult, USA Today, LA Review of Books, Bright Wall/Dark Room, Apex magazine, Shimmer, and others. Her debut novel "When Franny Stands Up" was named a best book of 2022 by the Chicago Reader, a best queer book of 2022 by Autostraddle, and Best Book of the Month by Bustle and Buzzfeed. She co-hosts a science podcast called No Such Thing As Boring with an actual scientist and produces a monthly live lit show in Chicago called Tuesday Funk. Previously, she sold sex toys, wrote jokes for Big Pharma, and once did a stand-up comedy set to an audience who didn't boo. She lives in Chicago, has been to the bottom of the ocean, and will never go to space. Find out more scintillating tidbits at monkeythumbs.com and on Twitter and Instagram @edenrobins.
