Discussing Joan by Katherine Chen and The Book of Joan by Lydia Yuknavitch

Led by former Greenlight general manager Alexis, our fiction book group meets monthly to discuss paperback fiction, reading broadly in contemporary fiction with the occasional diversion into classics. For September, the group discusses not one, but TWO books: Joan by Katherine Chen and The Book of Joan by Lydia Yuknavitch, exploring the legacy of Joan of Arc from multiple angles. Chen's Joan is a sweeping narrative of the myth and legend—USA Today hails the novel as "a secular reimagining and feminist celebration... that transforms the legendary saint into a flawed yet undeniable young woman." With unforgettably vivid characters, transporting settings, and action-packed storytelling, Joan is a thrilling epic and triumph of historical fiction that reveres one remarkable—and remarkably real—woman who left an indelible mark on history. Yuknavich's The Book of Joan offers a vision of our species' near-extinction and a heroine poised to save a world ravaged by war, violence, and greed. Praised as "brilliant and incendiary" (Jeff Vandermeer), The Book of Joan raises questions about what it means to be human, the fluidity of sex and gender, and the role of art as a means for survival.
