About this Event
This workshop will look at maqam music through exploring the nay (or ney), the reed-made wind instrument that is present in the traditional Arabic music repertoire. Through looking at how the nay is crafted, how it is played, we will learn about the various standard Arabic musical modes. We will also learn about the art of taqsim or musical improvisation along the maqam system. For those who play or have a nay, please bring your instrument along, but this is also open to those who just want to listen.
Bashir is a musician and a researcher focusing on the Ney, the Middle Eastern reed flute. He has been performing across the world for the past 20 years, and has collaborated with numerous international musicians and projects. Although being active in different musical scenes, his main focus is Maqam music. Bashir studies and performs early 20th Arabic and Turkish (Ottoman) music styles kept through pre-1930s recordings and that have today largely disappeared. In the UK, he is part of the Oxford Maqam ensemble that performs across the country and internationally, and collaborates with Scottish musicians interested in traditional musical forms. Bashir is also a Lecturer in Politics and Religion at the University of Stirling in Scotland.
All the proceeds from the tickets sales will go towards Falastin Film Festival.
