Description
Nothing is more satisfying than using your own fabrics for your landscapes art pieces!
In this workshop, Susan will show you how to use different mediums such as paints, inks, dyes and their myriad of uses to create your own fabrics and fibers for use in your landscapes and fibre artwork.
Susan Jensen is an accomplished quilter, pattern designer and fibre artist. She takes inspiration from the beauty in nature, and loves to photograph the waters, woodlands, and gardens in her home province of British Columbia.

What Does the Student Bring to Class?
1 metre of fabric (prepared for dyeing - PFD) See Class prep below (Note: Susan likes to use TrendTex 1377-10 Cotton Lawn)
Apron
A set of Rubber Gloves or surgical gloves
Box of Freezer paper
Roll of Paper Towel
Plastic bags to take any wet fabrics that are not dry by end of class
Old pressing cloth (it will get stained a little) (Note this will also be used in the dye portion of class as well)
Wear old clothes

Inks portion of class
Prepared for dyeing fabric - 1 – 8”x 10” rectangle
Rubbing Alcohol – 70% or higher
Hand embroidery hoop – 6” – 7” (I use a small snap of frame)
2 Pipettes
Paper Towel
1 Package of Sharpie coloured markers
Paint portion of class
Prepared for dyeing Fabric – manageable pieces
2” flat paint brush
Small shallow containers to mix your paints in, should be min. ½” in depth. (i.e. tuna fish cans, aluminium foil tart tins)
Large Yogurt container for water
Artist’s Sponges (available at Michaels)
Acrylic paints – in a variety of colours
Spray bottle that produces a fine mist
Golden’s GAC 900 - Fabric heat Painting Medium (can be found at Michael’s, The Gilded Rabbit, The Paint Spot)
Dye portion of class
Prepared for dyeing fabric – (1) 8 x 10” rectangle
½ tsp measuring spoon
Black Micron pen .05
Pencil
Dippity Doo Sport #9 Hair Gel (Dark blue bottle)
Eye makeup brushes (I get them at the dollar store)
(4) 3” aluminum foil tart tins to put mix dyes in
1 – 13” x 21”aluminum foil tray to contain the mix dyed
Plastic spoon for mixing
Face Mask to wear while mixing dyes.
A kit is included in the registration and includes the following:
Use of Procion Dyes
Soda Ash
Preparation prior to class:
Cut up your prepared for dyeing fabric in a variety of sizes:
(2) 8” x 10” rectangles (used in Inks and Dyes portion of the class)
Remaining fabric into smaller manageable pieces (used in Paints portion of the class)
Prepared for dyeing fabric:
This fabric can be purchased ready to use either online or possibly from a local art or fabric shop. If you have time, you can also prepare your fabric at home by pre-wash your cotton fabric in warm, soapy water without fabric softener.
