Description
Have you ever seen a photograph and said to yourself, “I would love to make that into a fabric wall hanging”. Krista Zeghers will show you the techniques and provide time for you to create our own fabric portraits! The workshop will teach you to: take and choose a great portrait photo; design a pattern based on value; choose appropriate fabrics, either realistic or stylized; use a variety of applique styles – turned, raw-edge and reverse; perform thread painting and quilt stitching to enhance portrait details; and how to finish your portrait. Make an 8” X 10” fabric portrait based on a photograph.
Krista lives in rural Manitoba, Canada and has been creating fibre art works for the past decade. She belongs to three professional groups: Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) an international group; Textile and Fibre Artists of Manitoba group; and the Mavericks, an Arizonan group, that all support her in her continued growth as an artist. Krista’s travels and nature inspire her artwork.

What Does the Student Bring to Class?
Upon return of the posterized version of your photo(s) you will need to choose the one you want to do in class. Print it out on copy paper so that the image fills the 8 ½” X 11” copy paper in your printer (See Workshop Prep Work)
Two or three clear plastic page protector sheets
Fine black sharpie marker
Freezer paper (sheets in letter size - 8 ½ X 11)
Dozen student grade pencil crayons of a variety of colours (no special brand needed)
Three or four different coloured highlighters
Variety of scraps of fabric in light, medium, and dark values in the colours you wish to use in your portrait for the background, shirt, hair, glasses, etc. (Skin tones can be tricky so bring lots of scraps for creating the face)
Paper scissors, fabric scissors (medium and small)
Spray starch
Cotton batting 10” X 12”
Chunk of wool batting about 5” X 8” (Regular batting can be used as a substitute)
Backing fabric 10” X 12”
Adhesives – glue stick, white glue, fusible of your choice (MistyFuse, WonderUnder, or Steam-a-Seam, etc.), and protective adhesive ironing sheet
Fine thread for invisible applique (Bottom Line, Sulky Invisible, Monopoly, Invisifil by Wonderfil, or any lightweight thread you may own)
50 weight cotton thread and heavier weight (30 or 40) polyester/shiny thread
Sewing Machine needles – for fine thread (Microtex), for thicker thread (Topstitch)
Sewing machine and manual
Basic Sewing Kit (Sewing Machine, Scissors, Pins, Thread, Hand Sewing Needles, Seam Ripper, etc.)
Basic Rotary Cutting Kit (Rotary Cutter(s), Cutting Mat, Extra Blades, etc.).
Light box (optional)
Duck billed scissors (optional)

Workshop Prep Work:
Each student must send a variety of possible digital portrait photographs to Krista by AUGUST 31st at [email protected] for the photos to be posterized. The photo(s) you send should be of good quality and not pixilated; a mixture of high, medium and low values; copyright free or your own photo; someone interesting that you care about. The face should be the dominant feature, but the person could have something interesting that they are showing or doing.
NOTE: There will be homework with this workshop
