The Center for Louisiana Studies and the Hilliard Art Museum will present the opening symposium for Festivals Acadiens et Créoles on October 10, 9:00 a.m.– 4:30 p.m., upstairs at the Hilliard. The Symposium is free, and open to the public, but registration is required at the link below.
Entitled Et asteur, quoi ?! Countercultural Currents, Artistic Intersections / Courants contre-culturels, intersections artistiques, the event explores how French and Creole movements have shaped Louisiana’s culture, music, and arts. Morning discussions trace the rise of language activism in festivals, public television, and radio. Language educators Amanda LaFleur, Barry Ancelet, and Herb Wiltz reflect on how their generation's activism sparked new movements in creativity.
Visual arts, language revitalization, and community-building are the focus for two afternoon panels featuring FrancoFAE, a fine arts collective comprised of artists in the Acadian diaspora, whose exhibit opens at the Hilliard the night before. Creole language educatior Clif St. Laurent, artist Jonathan J. Mayers, and West Baton Rouge Museum Director Angelique Bergeron will present projects linking visual arts, museum education, and Creole language learning. To mark Festivals Acadiens et Créoles’ Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities' Bright Lights Champion of Culture Award, the symposium with conclude with a special screening of recently unearthed archival footage.
