Please read the rules and conditions before completing your entry form on line in the Jot form sent with this email. Information to download the “app” to up load your “Pieces” and “Music” and get the program will be sent to you via email with a link for you to do this in late May. Spaces will be limited, once full, a waiting list will be created, more details to come if this should be necessary!

It is your responsibility to ensure you have entered the correct classes, please ensure you have answered all the questions before submitting your entry.
You will be sent an invite by email to the portal where music and poetry pieces can be uploaded prior to the competition. You must also bring a USB with your music on it correctly labelled should it be required.




ENTRY FEES: Except where otherwise stated, the entry fee for both Junior and Senior Competitors is$10.00 per class- This includes $1.10 PACANZ levy fees and APRA performance fees
$15.00 for Duets
$25 per Group of 3 or more
$40.00 for National Young Performer Award Entry Classes
ADMINISTRATION FEE: Each competitor is required to pay an Administration Fee of $20.00 in addition to the Entry Fee irrespective of the number of classes entered. Maximum fee is $30 per family, this includes a Program. Entry for public is $5 per adult.

RULES
1. COMPETITORS: Except where stated otherwise, these competitions are open to AMATEURS ONLY. An amateur is one whose MAIN INCOME is NOT derived from the exercise of his or her talent in the section in which he or she is competing. The Committee reserves the right to determine the status of any competitor.
2. ENTRIES: Entries and all fees and partners names (where required) shall be lodged with the Convenor on or prior to the due date. All entry payments must be via Internet Banking, entry is not accepted until payment appears on ASPA Inc statement! LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
a. Judge’s copies must be supplied to the Stage Manager at least 30 mins prior to the start of the class. ANY COMPETITOR WHO FAILS TO SUPPLY SUCH COPIES OF OWN SELECTIONS MAY BE DISQUALIFIED. ORIGINAL COPIES MUST BE SUPPLIED TO COMPLY WITH NZ COPY RIGHT LAW, ANY COPIES NOT COLLECTED ON THE DAY ON WHICH THE CLASS IS COMPLETED SHALL BE DISPOSED OF AS THE COMMITTEE DECIDES.
b. When age is given, this means the actual age at the commencement of the Competitions 1 June 2024.
c. No competitor may compete more than once in any class except for Duos, Duets and Trios where Not More Than Two Items May Be Presented with Different Partners. Entries for these classes should be made by one partner only and email the secretary the name of the partner or partners for the relevant class’s.
d. A competitor may not render the same piece in more than one class.
3. ELIGIBILITY OF ENTRANTS: No person who has been privately taught by the Adjudicator of any class or section during the year immediately preceding the competitions is eligible to compete in the classes concerned. The Executive shall decide eligibility of any entry and may decline to accept it. The receiving of any entry by the Convenor does not imply automatic acceptance. Compliance with the conditions relative to any entry is the responsibility of the competitor.
4. PRIZES: Where there are 4 competitors or less ONE PRIZE ONLY will be awarded. There will be no 1st equals. Where there are 5 competitors 2nd prize will be awarded, 7 or more 3rd prize will be awarded. Where two competitors are placed 2nd equal, they shall share 2nd & 3rd prize and no 3rd prize shall be awarded. Competitors who win cups must sign for these in person upon collection of reports and prizes. Except where stated otherwise, prizes will be given depending on numbers entered:
Certificates for 1st Place; All age groups VHC, HC, C.
5. The Committee reserves the right to combine or cancel classes for which it is considered that entries are insufficient.
6. CUPS AND TROPHIES: These are all CHALLENGE TROPHIES which may be held until notification of return in the following year. They must be returned to the Secretary or the appointed official on or before that date. Cups and trophies become the sole property of the Society on acceptance. The Society reserves the right to vary the conditions recommended by the donors as may be considered desirable. Competitors must compete in all classes relating to an award for which they are eligible. Points for trophies are allotted on a similar basis to the award of prize money. If this does not produce a clear result, the award shall be decided by adding individual marks gained in qualifying classes. The competitor must have attained a placing in all eligible classes for that cup to have their name engraved on the cup. A placing means gaining a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd from the adjudicator. We reserve the right to award or not to award cups. Failure to return cups and trophies to the Society by the due date may result in a competitor being disqualified. A fee of $20 will be charged for late return, damaged or unclean cups.
7. SCHOLARSHIPS: to the value stated entitle the winner to free tuition for a period from a teacher nominated by the competitor. Competitors who win scholarships must advise the name of the teacher to whom the scholarship is to be paid. Forms are available from the Convenor. The Winner is decided by most points across eligible classes; you must compete in all classes. 1st = 5 pts, 2nd = 3 pts, 3rd = 1pt
8. NOVICE: The term NOVICE is applied to competitor who has not won a first prize as a SOLO COMPETITOR in the Section concerned at any recognised competitions festival. Status as a NOVICE is determined at the actual time of the performance. Novices who qualify after entries close may transfer to one other class.
9. ORDER OF PERFORMANCE: Competitors names will appear in the programme in the order in which they are drawn, and competitors will perform in that order. All competitors should be in attendance 30 minutes before the commencement of the class in which they are competing. Those not called upon may forfeit their right to compete.
10. PROMPTING OR ASSISTANCE: of any kind MAY BE GIVEN BY THE ADJUDICATOR ALONE. Prompting of any kind may result in disqualification because of direct protest or on advice given to the Convenor or Adjudicator.
11. PROTESTS: Verbal protests will not be entertained. Persons wishing to enter protests must lodge this IN WRITING with the convenor together with a fee of $20.00, WITHIN TWELVE HOURS OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE JUDGE’S AWARD. Should the protest after investigation by the protest committee, be found to be frivolous, the fee may be forfeited.
12. JUDGE: If any teacher, competitor or other interested person shall prior to or during the festival communicate with the judge, the competitors(s) may be disqualified. NOTE – this does not prevent members of the Executive or Festival Officials speaking to the adjudicators in the normal course of their duties.
13. COUNTY CLASSES: Those who reside within the boundaries of the Rakaia and Rangitata Rivers. County Competitors who board at primary, intermediate or secondary schools outside the Ashburton County but return home for vacations will be eligible for County Classes.
14. VIDEO OR MOVIE CAMERAS INCLUDING CELL PHONES: are permitted subject to prior arrangement with the Executive when conditions of use will be fully explained.
15. THE DECISION OF THE EXECUTIVE SHALL BE FINAL IN REGARD TO PROTESTS, DISPUTES, AND INTERPRETATION OF RULES.
16. PRIVACY ACT: The Society reserves the right to publish photographs and names for publicity and results. Entry implies acceptance for names and addresses to be kept on file for mailing list purposes.
17. RISK: Competitors compete at their own risk and the Ashburton Society of Performing Arts accepts no liability for any injury or loss incurred during the festival.
18. TIME LIMITS: A time limit of 4 minutes applies to this section.
19. Subscribing Members: As an incorporated Society we are required to have subscribing membership. Membership is $10 and this is able to reduce your Administration fee to $10 per annum.
Our Adjudicators for 2024
Anna Luddy BFA New York Film, Med New York
Anna's passion for Theatre and performance began in her back garden with a makeshift stage, complete with a green room! Whether singing, acting or writing, the process and practice of storytelling has always been a part of her life. Anna has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and began her career as a production assistant at Nickelodeon. Her interest in creating children's programming led her to complete her Masters in Education for primary students and students with disabilities. While working as a Theatre Teacher and Content Developer in Brooklyn, New York, Anna led teacher development training and theatre workshops for primary school students. Anna's passion for teaching is rooted in the joys of learning through play and performance. Anna and her family moved to Methven from New York in 2022. She currently teaches in Methven and runs after-school Theatre Workshop programs.

Steph Tantau BA Auckland Double Major Film and Television, Theatre
Classically trained, Steph has played a variety of roles from Shakespeare to Mamet, working in theatres in NZ and Australia. She has also appeared in numerous roles in film and television. Prior to returning to NZ she was awarded Best Supporting Actress in the Victorian Dramatic League for her role as Honey in ‘Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf’.
Steph completed her Film, Television and Theatre degree at Auckland University in 2005. She then went on to work under the guidance of such renowned directors as Ben Crowder, Tom Sainsbury and Michael Hurst.
In 2009 Steph moved to Melbourne and started her own comedy theatre company, Mellow Yellow Productions. During her time in Australia she also taught Theatre and Performance in Queensland and Victoria.
Steph recently relocated to the South Island with her family and has established the successful interactive theatre company, Lady Scarlett Murder Mystery.

MUSICAL THEATRE CRITERIA:
- Different pieces must be performed for each class entered.
- All performances should include an element of movement or dance for a cohesive musical theatre performance
- Props are permitted but they must be handheld and not require any assistance.
- A backing track must be provided and will include music and silence as required for the full performance. This must be supplied on a clearly named USB’s by the given date required. No music and you will be disqualified!
You will also have the opportunity to upload your music to our APP, a date will be given for this.
Performance Pieces will be no longer than 4 minute unless stated otherwise.

Scene into song – A short scene under 60 seconds into song, can be from the libretto or self-devised. Optional costume and props

4 Musical Theatre songs linked cohesively and thematically, one must include a section of monologue and movement must be included to create a cohesive musical theatre performance
