Cumberland Knights of St. Andrew to Host 3rd Annual Festival of St. Andrew
The Cumberland Chapter of the Knights of St. Andrew will host its 3rd Annual Festival of St. Andrew the Apostle featuring a menu of wild game and Scottish fare following the Chapter’s Annual Communication on Monday, November 25 at 5:30 pm at the Cumberland Masonic Temple. Scottish Rite Freemasons and their guests are invited to attend the dinner beginning at 7:00 pm.
The Gospel of John informs us that Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist and one of two disciples who followed Jesus after John had pointed him out, saying, “Behold the Lamb of God.” Andrew’s first act of discipleship was to find his brother, Simon Peter, and bring him to Jesus. We might call Andrew the first missionary among the disciples.
Tradition has it that Andrew traveled to Scythia were he was crucified by angry pagans on an X-shaped cross.
St. Andrew has been celebrated in Scotland for over one thousand years, with feasts being held in his honor as far back as the year 1000 AD. However, it wasn’t until 1320, when Scotland’s independence was declared with the signing of The Declaration of Arbroath, that he officially became Scotland’s patron saint. Since then, St. Andrew has become an integral part of Scottish society. The flag of Scotland is the saltire, also known as St. Andrew’s Cross, and the ancient town of St. Andrews was named due to its claim of being the final resting place of St. Andrew.
There is no fee to attend the Festival. However, reservations are required and donations to the Cumberland Scottish Rite Foundation will be accepted.
New members of the Cumberland Chapter of the Knights of St. Andrew will be initiated during the Annual Communication. Membership is open to all 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Freemasons in good standing. Those who are interested in membership may contact Valley Secretary Robin Summerfield for information at [email protected] or 301-729-2491.
