Festival of Small Halls is a series of tours that takes the best folk and contemporary acoustic artists and sends them on the road to tiny halls in communities all over Australia. It is produced by Woodfordia Inc in partnership with many other wonderful Australian festivals, regional partners and great lovers and supporters of folk and contemporary acoustic music. Merton Memorial Hall stands on the traditional lands of the Taungurung People.
150km north-east of Melbourne, on the Great Victorian Rail Trail, you’ll find the small town of Merton, not far from Bonnie Doon, which was made famous in recent times as the home of the Kerrigan family in the classic Aussie film, The Castle. According to local folklore Ned Kelly also strutted his stuff here back in the day, raiding the Cobb and Co. Transport system on the Euroa/Mansfield line.
Merton is home to a gracious old country hall, originally built in 1923 as a mechanics institute, but like many small halls renamed as a Memorial Hall in 1945 after the war. Resting in the shade of a gorgeous cherry blossom, Merton Memorial Hall has been the home of Merton Balls, birthday parties, weddings, music festivals and celebrations for most of the last century and was lovingly restored in 2016 to the great acclaim of all serious small hall renovators.
Festival of Small Halls returns to Merton on Thursday, 13 March 2025 with Hat Fitz and Cara and Lucy Farrell.
