An afternoon festival of arts, science and conversation in celebration of planet Earth, followed by an overnight vigil on the eve of COP26
About this Event

Throughout the afternoon:

  • Food, drink and an open fire in our beautiful courtyard on Piccadilly
  • What is COP26 anyway? with Penelope Turton
  • BeeUrban workshops and photography exhibition with Barnaby Shaw and Anne-Marie Briscombe
  • 'Breathe on me and I will unfurl in the moisture you exhale' - Micro-tours of the courtyard and garden using wearable magnifying glasses - get up close and personal with fossils, lichens, mosses and more. Tour developed by artist-in- residence Esmeralda Valencia Lindstrom, led by Deborah Colvin.
  • 1.00 - 3.00 Art sale of work by our own Finna Ayers, Fiona Notman and Sara Mark with auction at 3.00pm to raise funds for St James's FEAST and Sunday Breakfast for those experiencing homelessness
  • Poetry readings before each event, curated by Diane Pacitti

PROGRAMME

Ola and The Amalgam

1.00 – 1.20 Afro-euro fusion to kick-start the afternoon.

1.00 - 3.00 Original artworks by our own Finna Ayers, Fiona Notman and Sara Mark for sale, with auction at 3.00pm

Jill Darrell, Natural History Museum

1.00 - 4.00 Drop-in workshop on the creation of Britain's first geological map by William Smith. Fossils, rock strata and an incredible human story involved!

In conversation with Kabir Kaul

1.30 – 2.00 Kabir is an award-winning 16-year-old conservationist, wildlife writer and London National Park City Ranger

The King Cave project

2.00 – 3.00 Join the King Cave Project in a musical celebration of the glory and delight of the natural world and a meditation on what it might mean to ‘enjoy the world aright’ (Thomas Traherne).

This concert of original settings of the words of seventeenth-century poet, priest and mystic, Thomas Traherne, features works by composers and songwriters from London, New York and Copenhagen, brought to life by singers and instrumentalists from across musical genres. Audience participation welcome!

3.15 - 3.35 Afro-Euro fusion Part 2

Katherine Pogson, multi-species researcher

Paul Wood, author of 'London is a Forest' and 'London's Street Trees'

3.35 – 4.30 Katherine works with moths and textiles as a way into environmental engagement and visualising data. Paul will share his passion for London’s trees, including a tour of our own site.

4.30 - 5.15 ‘How can we be happy?’ The wisdom of Thomas Traherne for an anxious world.

Community poetry workshop with Diane Pacitti.

5.30 bring your experiences and revelations from the micro-tour and we will build a communal response to take into the overnight vigil


STAY WITH US OVERNIGHT for an Interfaith vigil from 6.00pm

We will spend the night in the courtyard, in solidarity with those already impacted by climate change and with the delegates and representatives from almost 200 countries who will be preparing for COP26 to start on Monday morning in Glasgow


• Hourly programme of meditations, readings and music throughout the night

• Evening soup and bread, with conversation facilitated by Simon Thomas Founder of the City to City Network (www.citytocity.org), a catalyst for conversation, innovation and transformation to inspire individuals and organisations to help re-shape cities.

• Open fires for warmth and conviviality, overnight snacks and breakfast provided

• Please wear warm clothes and bring a sleeping bag etc

Drop in any time during the afternoon. Please sign up for the vigil part of the day to help us with catering.
