A day of talks and readings exploring the legacies, current practices and future directions of feminist and other architectural writing.
About this Event

n this event hosted by Situated Practice MA, The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL and organised by Jane Rendell, Polly Gould and Sarah Butler, with Emma Cheatle (University of Sheffield) and Hélène Frichot (University of Melbourne), we celebrate feminist architectural writing with a festival of readings, conversations and discussions exploring legacies, current practices and future directions, and launch two new publications.

The festival is made up of two parts: a day of curated readings and two roundtables around lunch, and an evening of two book launches around a drinks reception. Attendance is free but please register via Eventbrite for either the day or evening or both.

The day’s curated readings are the Rearrangements titled: Experimental Feminist Architectural Histories, Writing in the Expanded Field, and Ecopoetics, and are interwoven with the conversations of Live Writing and Environmental Storytelling.

Rearrangements presents feminist architectural writings by alumni researchers from the Critical Spatial Practices: Site-Writing module. In the spirit of feminist critique, these writings are critical of, and inventive with, the conventions of what is seen to be valid as a topic of architectural inquiry as well as expanding and experimenting with what is possible in the form of the writing itself.

Rearrangements change the order of things. Staged as a sequence of readings in three arrangements, they introduce a new generation of feminist architectural writers: including Anna Andersen, Xiaowen Fu, Eliot Hawarth, Flo Armitage-Hookes, Marianna Janowicz, Catalina Mejia Moreno, Sophie Read, Chloe Shang, Eva Tisnikar, Rachel Tyler, Anna Livia Vorsel and Zoe Quick.

Live Writing (hosted by Emma Cheatle and Luis Hernan) is a series of conversational readings between Angela Kyriacou and Ruth Oldham, Adriana Massidda and Laura Mark, and Toby Blackman and Naina Gupta, that suggest acts of writing that implicitly care for a locality, where connections are created that extend from a writer towards a context to reveal ways of being in the world, paying attention to it and others who inhabit it.

Environmental Storytelling hosted by Hélène Frichot and Isabelle Doucet introduce environmental storytelling as a methodological tool for critically analyzing urgent questions related to climate justice and for developing creative and situated imaginaries for alternative futures.
