About this Event
Continuing an art history class series curator and founder of Processa, Kiara Cristina Ventura, started in 2019, this class will revive another iteration.
The Feminine Spirit art history class will highlight Black and Indigenous women artists who utilize their art practice to channel spirit and connect with the flow of nature. Highlighting performance, video, and sculpture work, the class will dive into how each artist engages in their practice with intention and intertwines practice as ritual, sculpture as altars, and performance as offerings. Here, we will discuss powerful artists such as Maria Magdalena Campos Pons, Amalia Mesa-Bains, Beverly Buchanan, Ana Mendieta, Senga Nengudi, and more. We will use concepts from the 1992 book “Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype” by psychoanalyst Clarissa Pinkola Esté as a framework throughout the class.
*You do not need to have any experience in art or art history to attend this class. Come as you are.*
Previously named AW Classroom, now Processa Classroom (est. 2019) is a series of classes and talks pushing the boundaries of art history and the future of how it should be taught. The series includes in person and virtual art history classes and talks with contemporary creatives and visionaries of color, hosted by artist & curator Kiara Cristina Ventura.
Combating Western/white cis male centered art history classes and curriculums, Processa Classroom educates the public about modern and contemporary artists of color outside of traditional university walls. Offering accessible classes around NYC and beyond, Processa Classroom has taught at Gavin Brown Enterprise, VICE headquarters, various artist & collectors' living rooms, Rep.club LA, 8Ball Collective Headquarters, Ghetto Gastro, Bronx Art Space, NXTHVN and more.
