Sun 6 Oct: Good posture & how to find it
If you’ve ever been told (or have told yourself) to stop slouching and sit up or stand up straight or despite your hard work you believe your posture to be poor - this is the workshop for you.
Google ‘Good Posture’ and you’ll see an image of a person standing still, not doing anything apart from standing still. Not very functional! What happens when you turn, bend, dance, reach or run?
Moshe Feldenkrais had a unique approach to the question of good posture. Instead of seeing it as a series of static positions in which we use muscular effort to achieve an externally imposed ideal, he suggested that we each can learn to find for ourselves the ideal organisation for any particular action.
A concept he called ‘acture’.
When our skeletons counteract the pull of gravity, our muscles are freed from unnecessary effort. We don’t need to pull in our bellies, stiffen our backs and fix our shoulders, and we can move more easily, efficiently and elegantly in whatever direction we choose.
