About this Event
Feeling blue: colour and the modern British hospital
In this talk, Dr Victoria Bates (University of Bristol) will discuss her new book on the history of hospital colour. She will examine colour in relation to six key themes - hygiene, emotion, humanisation, homeliness, play, consumerism - which are tied together by the idea of the 'modern' hospital. This presentation will use colour to understand the layered meanings of modernity in twentieth-century Britain, and its relationship to the 'mundane' or everyday life of hospitals. It will also show how colour is not just a visual or cultural phenomenon, but also an embodied, material, and multi-sensory one.
